Today's average wedding can cost upwards of $30,000.00. With average single salaries hitting the $40,000.00 mark, that can be a huge burden to bear long after the cake has been cut and the guests have all gone home.

If Mom and Dad are footing the bill, and they seem to be ok with such a hefty price tag, then strike up the band, but if you and your fiance will be the ones tackling the bills, you might want to curb some of your "perfect day" plans, to something that will be rewarding both in terms of satisfaction and in terms of costs.

While that could be a DIY (do-it-yourself) recipe for some, for others it could be the call to scale down their plans and or guest list. Big dress, big limo, big party, big accessories and big favors paired up with a smaller guest list, is just one way to see smaller than average costs.

The biggest financial trap bridal couples fall into, is the "pay it with plastic" mode of thinking. Instead of planning and budgeting their wedding, costing out and looking for bargains that can make all of their dreams come true, they take a buy what you want and pay for it later mentality - a course that could lead to disaster.

Take the couple who both regularly paid off their credit card debt, with nary a cent towards interest. With good paying jobs, excellent prospects for the future and well-laid plans for the future, deciding to "budget" for their wedding by placing it all on plastic, seemed like the easiest method to both pay and "save" for their wedding. But then one day, unexpectedly, a job is lost, a family member takes ill and needs looking after or you or your spouse fall ill, or are injured, then that easy payment becomes more arduous. Not only can it cause serious damage to your finances, it can also cause serious damage to your relationship, as debt and finances is cited as the number one reason for marital difficulty.

Why start your marital bliss on such a tumultuous path? Better to make the plans, hold off on the date until the requisite funds are collected, and then spend them with the ease of mind of knowing that your marriage will not start off in hard to manage debt.
