It is quite astonishing that 2 millions cars are taken off British roads every year as they come to their end of life, or have been involved in a road traffic accident. But there are selection of cars that find themselves returning to the road, even after quiet bad accidents.
Of course we have heard the horror stories of two cars welded together and others bodged with fibreglass and some that look like a crab as they go along the road, due to bad workmanship putting these once salvage cars back on the road. The reality is through, with so much salvage around, there is no longer any need to buy cars that cannot be repaired properly. Prices for salvage can vary enormously based on the cost of the repair, but more importantly the popularity of the vehicles concerned. For example, it is not uncommon to see to of the range BMW's and Mercedes reaching prices not far short of buying a decent second hand one anyway. But some makes less popular, can go extremely cheap, and if you are after a good reliable car from salvage that could give you years of use, then this may be the solution for you.
If you think the UK salvage market is big, you should consider what happens in the USA. There are auto salvage auctions occurring in just about every city in the USA, every day. Unlike the UK market, the auto salvage auction still occur live with trade attending the location as well as taking bids over the net. In the UK, physical car salvage auctions have just about disappeared now, with the top auctions only dealing with online bids.
Thousands of salvage cars are auctioned off in the UK every week, mainly from insurance companies who have already paid out an insurance claim and wish to get a return from what is left of the car. Some are auctioned off just for parts, in which you need to have a breakers license to strip the car down and effectively take off the road, but many more need very little to do to them to make roadworthy, if in fact any work at all.
Some cars are deemed as salvage but are in fact stolen recovered, which means an insurance company has paid out on a claim, and then the car has turned up at a later date. Again depending on make and model, some great bargains can be found looking for this type of salvage.
Another type of salvage can be water damaged cars, which by drying out the engine and interior, you could end up with a car as good as new, or not if you try starting the vehicle without maintaining the engine first. There is huge amount of water damaged auto salvage in the States, where there they establish if the autos are salt water damaged or fresh water, apparently it makes a difference. So if you are handy with cars, you may find a bargain, either salvage in the UK, or auto salvage in the States.
