The UK is greener then we have ever been before and no I don’t mean we have more fields. I am talking about our carbon footprints and co2 emissions. We are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of recycling and doing our bit to protect the planet. The UK is responsible for over 500¹ million tonnes of co2 a year, as individuals we are responsible for a huge 45%¹ of this. We need to freeze our carbon footprints, after all we don’t own this planet so who are we to destroy it?

Reducing co2 emissions seems like a pretty large task and yes, it would be impossible to do it alone. But every bit will help and changing our behaviours today is what we as individuals need to do in order to see the bigger picture of reducing the amount of co2 we are putting into the atmosphere. There is not just one or two things you can do there are several, so let’s explore some top tips and discover how to be greener.

1) Standby your plan. You know those little red lights on televisions, DVD players and other electrical equipment? In the UK alone we produce 3.1² million tonnes of co2 just from our electric equipment being left on standby. Don’t be lazy – switch it off! If we all did this we would be one step closer to a greener planet.

2) Waste not want not. Don’t waste food. 1/3³ of food bought in the UK is wasted. Freeze it, share it, eat it. It is as simple as that.

3) Car-bon emissions. A big contributor to co2 emissions is caused by driving in our cars. With 25%4 of journeys being less then two miles be sure that next time before you reach for your keys think if you really need to drive. Nipping to the local shop for milk doesn’t really require adding co2 emissions to the planet. Walking or cycling is much healthier and can save 280kg4 of co2 a year.

4) Freeze your emissions. When it comes to home appliances you can really make a difference to the environment. Look for A and A++ energy rated models which save money off your bills and contribute to saving the planet. Be sure that your freezer is efficient, this appliance works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and need to run at its best. Look out for freezers with a frost free feature – eliminating the build up of ice and frost from the freezer meaning you save time defrosting and save energy as your freezer will not have to work as hard when storing your food.

5) Use, recycle, reuse. There is no excuse, we have been given bins and bags in various colours and collection schedules for our waste. Fill these bins and feel proud knowing your bottles and cans and other household wastes are being taken away and made into something else. We have all seen the recycling advert where we follow the journey of a can, and yes it may just come back as another can, I personally hope my little cans become part of a plane though!

So start today, it is no longer something we can pass off to the next person, it is our responsibility and it is about time we all pulled together. So let’s reduce our emissions and see what a difference we can make.
